Director (AI strategy, UK)

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years’ experience at a top tier management consultancy or agency, working within their strategy consulting division on multi-billion dollar turnover businesses.

Overview

Road to Amherst is an AI Strategy & Organisational Transformation consultancy offering independent support to help businesses embrace AI in the right way. As a growing firm headquartered in London, we are looking for a seasoned Director to run our UK strategy consulting team, driving high-impact AI advisory projects, client growth, and thought leadership.

The Strategy Consulting Director will play a pivotal role in leading AI strategy consulting engagements, shaping our team, and driving business growth. This role requires a combination of deep consulting expertise, AI market insight, and entrepreneurial leadership.

Key responsibilities:

Client leadership & AI strategy execution 

  • Lead AI strategy and organisational transformation projects from inception to delivery, ensuring high-quality outcomes

  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior clients, with a strong perspective on the consumer and business value of AI and emerging / evolving trends in the AI landscape  

  • Guide clients in identifying opportunities for AI-driven consumer and business value, prioritising initiatives, and aligning AI investments with business objectives

  • Create (and oversee the creation of) client-facing deliverables such as slide packs, business cases, workshops, internal pitch decks (from research to creation and presentation)

  • Build and strengthen long-term client relationships, acting as a strategic partner beyond individual projects.

Team leadership & development

  • Lead, mentor and line manage the consulting team, developing talent and fostering a high-performance culture

  • Oversee, shape and quality assess the team’s outputs, ensuring clear, insightful and commercially sound recommendations 

  • Own recruitment for the consulting team, bringing in both permanent and freelance talent as the firm grows.

Business development & thought leadership

  • Identify and develop new business opportunities, driving both growth within existing accounts and expansion into new clients.

  • Lead high-impact client pitches and proposals, shaping compelling narratives that demonstrate Road to Amherst’s expertise and value.

  • Represent Road to Amherst in external marketing, thought leadership, and speaking engagements, strengthening our reputation as a leader in AI strategy consulting.

About you:

  • Extensive consulting experience (10+ years) at a top-tier management consulting firm, agency or specialised strategy consultancy, with a proven track record of leading and delivering strategic advisory projects.

  • Strong strategic perspective on AI’s impact—able to cut through the hype and guide business leaders toward real value.

  • Exceptional business acumen, problem-solving skills, and analytical thinking, with the ability to develop AI-driven business cases, strategic roadmaps, and transformation plans.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and deliver persuasive executive presentations.

  • Proven ability to own and grow client relationships at the C-suite and senior leadership levels, acting as a trusted advisor.

  • Strong team leadership skills, with experience managing and mentoring high-performing consultants in a fast-paced, intellectually demanding environment.

  • Highly entrepreneurial and proactive, comfortable operating in a startup environment with ambiguity and rapid change.

  • Flexible, adaptable, and resilient—able to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution in a fast-moving industry.
